Research in behavioral psychology shows that identity is a powerful driver of action. When you identify as someone who values health, for example, you’re far more likely to make choices that align with that identity—like eating well or exercising.
Dr. James Clear, in Atomic Habits, explains that identity-based habits are the most sustainable because they focus on who you become rather than what you achieve. For instance, instead of setting a goal to “write a book,” shift your identity to “I am a writer.” The more you align your actions with this identity, the more natural these habits will feel.
Success, therefore, isn’t about checking off boxes. It’s about adopting the mindset and behaviors of the person who naturally achieves those goals.
If you’ve ever wondered what separates those who achieve extraordinary success from those who don’t, the answer often lies in identity. Success doesn’t start with action—it starts with becoming. Step 3 of the ELEVATE Framework focuses on embodying the identity of success.
This step is about aligning your mindset, habits, and daily actions with the person who already lives the life you desire. By shifting your identity to match your goals, you don’t just hope for success—you attract it.
Neuroscience research supports the idea that consistent behavior reshapes your brain over time. This process, known as neuroplasticity, allows you to rewire thought patterns and create habits that reinforce your new identity.
When you align your identity with your goals, you not only change your mindset but also develop habits that make achieving your vision inevitable.
Rather than trying to overhaul your entire life, focus on small, repeatable actions that reinforce your new identity. Behavioral psychologist BJ Fogg emphasizes the importance of “tiny habits” in creating lasting change.
For example, if your future self is someone who values health, start by drinking a glass of water every morning or going for a 10-minute walk. Over time, these small actions will compound into big results.
Embodying your future self doesn’t require a massive overnight transformation. Instead, it’s about small, consistent shifts in mindset and behavior that align with the person you want to become.
1. Define Your Future Self
Ask yourself: Who do I need to become to achieve my goals?
- What beliefs does this person hold?
- How do they think, act, and feel?
- What habits do they prioritize daily?
For example, if your goal is to build a thriving business, your future self might be disciplined, confident, and proactive.
Exercise: Write down 3 traits or habits of your future self and reflect on how you can start integrating them into your life today.
The language you use to describe yourself has a profound impact on your identity. Instead of saying, “I want to be healthy,” say, “I am someone who prioritizes my health.”
Positive affirmations and intentional self-talk help reinforce your new identity and make it easier to adopt behaviors that align with your goals.
Your future self isn’t just an idea—it’s a series of consistent actions. Make a habit of asking yourself: Is this action aligned with the person I want to become?
For example, if your future self is a confident leader, take small steps each day to build confidence—like speaking up in meetings, seeking feedback, or mentoring others.
For today’s challenge, take 15–20 minutes to embody the identity of your future self:
- Write down a description of your future self. Who are they? What habits, traits, and beliefs define them?
- Identify one small action you can take today that aligns with this identity.
- Practice shifting your self-talk to affirm this new identity.
Mantra for Step 3
"I am becoming the person who achieves extraordinary success."
