Setting goals is an essential aspect of achieving success in any aspect of life. However, not all goals are created equal. Some goals may be too vague, unrealistic, or unattainable, leading to frustration and disappointment. The well-known S.M.A.R.T. goals were developed by George Doran, Arthur Miller and James Cunningham in their 1981 article ,“There’s a S.M.A.R.T. way to write management goals and objectives.” I actually like the S.M.A.R.T.E.R Goals framework that Michael Hyatt introduced better:
1. Specific: Clearly articulate your career goal. Instead of a vague goal like “be more productive,” set a specific goal like “complete three high-priority tasks daily.”
2. Measurable: Quantify your goal to track progress. Instead of “become a better presenter,” set a measurable goal like “deliver one presentation per week to improve public speaking skills.”
3. Actionable: Ensure your goal is attainable and within your control. Instead of “get a promotion,” focus on “expand my skillset by taking a professional development course related to my field.”
4. Risky: Set a challenging goal that pushes you outside your comfort zone. If networking is difficult for you, set a goal to attend two industry events per month and connect with new professionals.
5. Time-keyed: Establish a specific deadline to create a sense of urgency. Instead of “learn a new software,” try “master a new software program within the next 30 days.”
6. Exciting: Choose career goals that energize and motivate you. Align your goals with your passions and interests, making the journey toward professional growth enjoyable and rewarding.
7. Relevant: Ensure your goals are relevant to your long-term career objectives and values. Reflect on why you want to achieve this goal and how it aligns with your overall career path.
By setting SMARTER goals, you’ll create thoughtful, well-defined objectives for your career growth over the next 30 days. Remember this inspirational quote by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” This quote emphasizes the importance of having a well-structured plan and SMARTER goals, to turn dreams and aspirations into achievable objectives. Embrace your goals and create a roadmap that will lead you to success and fulfillment in your career.
